2025 Texas Elections
On Tuesday, November 4, Texas held a statewide election to decide on 17 proposed constitutional amendments. In the Houston area, Democrats Christian Menefee, Harris County Attorney, and Amanda Edwards, a former Houston City Councilmember, advanced to a runoff to replace the late U.S. Representative Sylvester Turner in Texas’ 18th Congressional District.
Local elections were also held in the Houston area. The “C” Club endorsed Houston ISD, Trustee, District VII incumbent Bridget Wade, and we are proud that she has won reelection to continue putting students and parents first.
The “C” Club of Houston was also happy to see that the proposed constitutional amendments that we endorsed passed.
Other Key Elections
In other parts of the nation, a blue wave swept major elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City. In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger was elected Governor, Democrat Ghazala Hashmi was elected Lieutenant Governor, and Democrat Jay Jones was elected Attorney General despite the controversy surrounding recently released, violent text messages from Jones wishing violence against a fellow state legislator and his family. The composition of Virginia’s House of Delegates also shifted further to the left as Democrats now control 64 of the state’s 100 seats.
In the New Jersey gubernatorial election, Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli with 56.5% of the vote. And in New York City, Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral election, defeating Republican Curtis Sliwa and former NY Governor Andrew Cuomo who ran in the general as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic Primary.
In response to Tuesday night’s election results, President Trump said, “Last night, it was, you know, not expected to be a victory, it was very Democrat areas, but I don’t think it was good for Republicans,” adding on Truth Social that “‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters.” (@realDonaldTrump, Truth Social)
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, however, does not believe that these results indicate any trouble for Republicans’ electoral chances in the future saying, “What happened last night was blue states and blue cities voted blue. We all saw that coming … And no one should read too much into last night’s election results. Off-year elections are not indicative of what’s to come.” (The Hill)
While it is difficult to tell what this off-year sample group will mean for the 2026 midterm elections, it is clear that Republicans cannot be complacent in their attempt to retain control of the House and Senate.
