Texas Redistricting Update

Since our previous newsletter, there has been a roller coaster of actions taken on Texas’s efforts to redistrict in time for the 2026 congressional midterm elections. On November 18, a three-judge U.S. District Court panel ruled that the new congressional maps could not be used on a basis that it was “unconstitutional racial gerrymandering.” Three days later, the State of Texas and the White House asked the U.S. Supreme Court to pause the lower court’s ruling.

On Thursday, December 4, the U.S. Supreme Court gave the green light for Texas’s newly redrawn map to be used in the 2026 midterm elections and ordered a pause on the District Court’s ruling indefinitely. In their order, the court indicated that Texas was likely to win the case and that the District Court “improperly inserted itself into an active primary campaign, causing much confusion and upsetting the delicate federal-state balance in elections.”

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, Governor Greg Abbott made the following statement: “We won! Texas is officially—and legally—more red. The U.S. Supreme Court restored the redistricting maps passed by Texas that were based on constitutional principles and Supreme Court precedent. The new congressional districts better align our representation in Washington, D.C. with the values of our state. This is a victory for Texas voters, for common sense, and for the U.S. Constitution.”

2026 Texas U.S. Senate Election

On Monday, December 8, the Texas U.S. Senate election had a shake up on the Democratic side. In the morning hours, former Texas Representative Colin Allred dropped out of the Democratic primary, and soon after, Dallas-area Representative Jasmine Crockett announced her run for the seat. The Democratic primary is now essentially down to her and State Rep. James Talarico.

Here’s what the Republican frontrunners in the Senate race had to say:

Senator John Cornyn: “Jasmine Crockett does not represent the views of a majority of Texans,” said Sen. Cornyn. “Her time in Congress has been marked by deeply unserious public statements, little to no actual work for her constituents and over-the-top rhetoric and childish insults. She is radical, theatrical and ineffective. As the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate, our campaign will make sure every Texas voter knows how absurd her candidacy is, and in the process provide up ballot support to down ballot Republicans, including the five new Congressional seats that President Trump has made a priority.” (Source)

Attorney General Ken Paxton: “She’s running in the wrong state if she doesn’t think she needs Donald Trump supporters … Donald Trump won this state by an overwhelming majority. And if some of those voters aren’t voting for her, which they’re not going to, she’s running in the wrong state … She has no chance of winning this election.” (Source)

Representative Wesley Hunt (TX-38): “Welcome to the show, Jasmine Crockett. The next Senator from Texas must be able to stand on their record, their resume, and their accomplishments. I’m ready to have that debate every single day. I’m ready to be judged not by the color of my skin, but by the content of my character, because Texans don’t hand out Senate seats based on identity politics. They choose the person who is most qualified, most proven, and most prepared to fight for them. GAME ON.” (Source)
